Recently VHA (Vodafone Hutchison Australia) held an internal competition to design your own iPhone app, where the winning prize was a BRAND NEW 16GB iPhone 3G S. There were loads of fantastic ideas that came through! TheApplication Customisation Device Team has chosen a winner. His two winning entries were:

“What’s on the other side of the world” 

With this application the user can find out what is on the other side of the world. The application gets a GPS fix and calculates the latitude and longitude of the exact opposite spot on the globe (i.e. directly under your feet on the other side). It then pulls down a Google Map image of where that is and puts a dot on the map.

“What’s in that direction?”

With this application the user can find out what places of interest are in front of them. This application gets a GPS fix, the application also start the gyro and gets a compass direction that the phone is pointing in. From that it knows where on the map the person is and in which direction they are pointing their phone. It then pulls down a list of towns, places of interest etc that are in that direction and their relative distances.

Special mentions must also go to:

“iMonitor/iBaby” (where you could use your iPhone to communicate to a second Iphone, or through intranet to be used as a baby monitor) 

“InkSpace” (where you could use your iPhone to create avatars, pics and themes to send to other uses via bluetooth or MMS and create groups or play interactive games etc.)

“INtouch” a central communications hub, that will allow users to easily and quickly communicate with others via the method that is best suited. All the contact details, SMS exchanges, MMS exchanges, email conversations, Facebook status, Twitter messages, Flickr photo albums, Yahoo IM exchanges, MSN exchanges, Google latitude position(s) and phone logs, neatly organized by people.
